Claire Fernandez Claire co-leads the strategic vision, impact and fundraising of the Belgian section of FIAN International (FoodFirst Information and Action Network), a human rights organisation advocating for the right to food and nutrition. She also oversees the organisation’s internal governance. Before joining FIAN Belgium, Claire served for more than six years as Executive Director of the Brussels-based digital rights advocacy group European Digital Rights (EDRi), leading both the organisation and its network – the largest European network advancing rights and freedoms online, comprising more than 50 civil rights organisations – before stepping down in the summer of 2025.
Before that, Claire was Deputy Director of the European Network Against Racism (ENAR). Earlier in her career, Claire worked as an independent human rights consultant, leading the Open Society Foundations’ campaign on the reform of the European Court of Human Rights and contributing to the revision of the Council of Europe Commissioner for Human Rights’ report on the human rights of Roma. She also served as an adviser to the Council of Europe Commissioner for Human Rights. Between 2008 and 2010, Claire represented the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) in Bosnia and Herzegovina and Kosovo, advising local authorities on good governance and the protection of minority rights. In June 2023, Claire was appointed to the Supervisory Board of the Centre for Research on Multinational Corporations (SOMO) in the Netherlands, on which she continues to serve. Outside of work, Claire enjoys spending time with her family and friends, working out, cooking and contributing to an anti-extractivism collective from the Balkans.
